The Mission of Stichting Leeuw

Stichting Leeuw is a rescue center for big cats located at Dierenpark Hoenderdaell in the Netherlands. Since 2012, this foundation has been committed to providing shelter to these animals in need, with the goal of giving them a better life and, when possible, preparing them for a return to their natural habitat in a semi-wild condition. Many of these animals come from difficult situations, such as circuses or private parks, and require specific care to readapt to a more natural life.

The foundation does not just provide a safe haven for these majestic animals, but it also performs essential work on multiple fronts:

• Shelter, rehabilitation, and care for feline predators in need: They provide a comfortable and safe environment for big cats, where they can receive appropriate care and recover from their previously traumatic lives.
• Behavioral research to improve animal well-being: Through behavioral studies, the foundation can improve the living conditions of the felines and better prepare those that can be reintroduced into their natural environment.
• Visitor education: An important aspect of Stichting Leeuw’s work is raising public awareness about the condition of big cats and how each of us can contribute to their protection.
• Participation in breeding programs for species survival: They collaborate with other organizations to ensure that these species do not become extinct.
• Relocation of feline predators to their natural habitat: When conditions allow, the ultimate goal is to return these animals to their homeland.
