Sustainability: dispelling the doubts

Sustainability: dispelling the doubts 900 600 Ecopack

A sustainable attitude is also based upon awareness of the terms and expressions related to such world

The topic of sustainability is often hazy, especially when it comes to raw material, and this may lead to misunderstandings and confusion upon acting to make the world cleaner.

This is why Ecopack has chosen to create a little manual on the topic, which allows us to better understand the terms and acronyms of sustainability, in favor of suppliers and customers.

Acronyms and materials

When speaking of materials – plastics above all – it is very easy to confuse things!

Why is this? Different polymers are specified using very similar acronyms, although they define materials with different features.

What is the difference between PP, PE, and PET?

What are the characteristics of polystyrene, PLA, Mater-Bi, and PFAS?

They may seem quite similar to the untrained eye, but in reality they are materials with different properties, and it is good to know the latter to know how to use, or in some cases NOT use, the materials.

Biodegradable, compostable, recyclable

We hear these terms related to the waste products we produce on a daily basis.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to make a distinction between biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable if we want to know exactly what material we are dealing with, and what its destiny will be once it is disposed of.

In fact, these three words specify three very different destinations of the waste products, and above all three different impacts on the environment once they enter it.

Moreover, when you recycle a material it is fundamental to know what the best way to do it is, and how to separate waste products to avoid incorrectly disposing of them.

Ecopack and sustainability

Ever since the establishment of our company, we are committed to the research behind materials with a reduced carbon footprint to manufacture our molds for the food industry.

Our continuous experimentation is directed to the creation of molds for the food industry with three fundamental features:

  • food grade certification for direct contact with foods as well as their preservatives and colorants;
  • technical properties such as the resistance to high and low temperatures;
  • environmental sustainability.

Your food packaging kit with the Ecopack system

Your food packaging kit with the Ecopack system 900 600 Ecopack

The ideal kit to heat-seal the Paper Pan range trays

The Paper Pan trays are a real must for those who wish to package their foods with a special care for the environment.

With the Ecopack system, you may package foods ecologically without tarnishing their quality in the transportation phase.

Film + heat-sealer + Paper Pan = Ecopack system

Paper Pan is even heat-sealable: although it is made mainly of paper, the tray may undergo heat-sealing.

By using the manual, multi-format heat-sealer, you may seal all the trays of the Paper Pan range, which may be then used in the oven, microwave, and freezer.

Thanks to the heat-sealing, food may be stored for a longer time, and liquids will not leak: it is a perfect complement to the Paper Pan tray.

The Paper Pan range

A myriad of plastic trays are used for food storage and transportation every day.

This means, unfortunately, a great consumption of raw material, and a problematic plastic recycling process, multiplied by the high number of trays found at supermarkets and grocery stores all around the world.

Moreover, it is hard to remove food residue from plastic, which needs to be completely clean for recycling purposes.

To respond to such issue, Ecopack has created the Paper Pan tray.

It is a tray made of paper, but with the same features as the more classic trays: in fact, its resistance to grease and liquids, as well as its mechanical stiffness, are excellent.

It has a myriad of possible uses: it can be used to package food exposed at delis and supermarkets, but even for take-away purposes, with its ability to maintain goodness and taste of food.

But that’s not all: Paper Pan uses 30% less cellulose compared to paperboard trays, but it maintains its mechanical resistance. Top-notch technical quality, with an environmental impact reduced to a bare minimum.

Discover all the Paper Pan range.

With the Ecopack system, you will have a Paper Pan, heat-sealing film, and a manual heat-sealer: all you will need to think about is the tasty food to store!

Ecopack to sponsor a solidarity cause

Ecopack to sponsor a solidarity cause 900 600 Ecopack

Ecopack is proud to sponsor a praiseworthy initiative organised by Colombatto Hotel School to offer free meals to people experiencing economic disadvantage, in support of sustainability, the circular economy and the fight against food waste.

At the forefront of solidarity

Unfortunately, we live in a world beset by social disparities, which have undoubtedly increased in this particular period. Many people experience serious hardships, struggling to provide a hot and nutritious meal for their families.

In order to make this winter less cold even for the less fortunate, Ecopack has decided to step in as a sponsor of the soup kitchen project organised by the hotel school which helps the hungry, by providing free food containers and lids for delivering the meals prepared by the students of the school.
In this way, we ensure that meals will arrive hot at their destination.

This initiative fits perfectly with the values of our company: environment protection, recycling, waste reduction and solidarity. This is why we immediately embraced it and supported it the best we can. Given our commitment to social responsibility and sustainable packaging, we could not but join this solidarity cause to help the less fortunate while fighting food waste.

Besides offering substantial help to the most needy, the initiative intends to raise awareness among young people on issues such as social solidarity, sustainability and waste reduction.

Also other associations are involved in the project, such as the Alpine Volunteers Association of Civil Defence for transport, the CAAT and the Turin Food Solidarity Association, which will collect unsold fruit and vegetables at the Agri-food Centre.

Ecopack joined the UN Global Compact

Ecopack joined the UN Global Compact 900 600 Ecopack

This is our way to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Anyone who knows our company knows that environmental protection is one of our top priorities: every year, we invest a lot of resources in researching and developing increasingly eco-friendly packaging solutions.
We aim to reduce our environmental impact while offering our customers products of the highest quality, with excellent technical characteristics, usable both at high and low temperatures and suitable for contact with food.

Joining the Global Compact Network Italy is another step forward for our company towards the well-being of the planet.

The UNGC and the Italian network

The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative to support the implementation of the United Nations sustainability goals.
The Global Compact Network Italy was established in 2013 as a foundation through which the United Nations Global Compact operates in our country.
One of the main goals of the organisation is to promote the Ten Principles of the Global Compact within our country, in addition to the commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda which strives to eradicate extreme poverty, spread peace and promote prosperity and human self-development.

The Ten Principles of the Global Compact

The goal of the Global Compact is to promote a sustainable world economy for everyone to enjoy, by encouraging companies to set up a constructive economic, social and environmental framework.
All the companies and organisations that join the pact, including Ecopack, share, advocate and enact its fundamental principles regarding human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and the fight against corruption.
The principles that underpin these rules are universally accepted – they derive from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ILO Declaration, the Rio Declaration and the United Nations Convention against corruption.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The United Nations General Assembly approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on 25 September 2015, with the participation of 150 international leaders.
The Agenda comprises 17 goals and 169 targets to be achieved by 2030.
Its goal is to set out global priorities related to the people, the planet, prosperity and peace while providing indicators to assess the sustainability performance of all the stakeholders involved in the project. With one goal: changing the world.

Disposable: what about the environment?

Since 1939, the year in which Ecopack started making moulds for industrial cake baking, the company’s commitment has focused particularly on the search for high-performance, eco-friendly materials that respect the environment without affecting the quality and safety of a product designed to come into close contact with food.

The Delivery range of disposable products for take-away food offers just that.

The lids are made of non-toxic RPET, making them ideal for the storage of food.

Ecopack is one of the winners of the 7 th edition of the CONAI competition for ecodesign 2020

Ecopack is one of the winners of the 7 th edition of the CONAI competition for ecodesign 2020 900 600 Ecopack

The environmental sustainability of Ecopack’s packaging and production with a view to circular economy has been rewarded.

The award for environmentally friendly packaging

Now in its seventh edition, in 2020 the “CONAI Competition for the Ecodesign of Packaging in the Circular Economy – Promoting the Environmental Sustainability of Packaging” offered prizes worth 500,000 euros to companies that manufacture and use packaging and have adapted their packaging to make it environmentally sustainable.

Of the 289 projects presented (18% more than last year), 160 were accepted and 92 companies received awards, announced during the “Economy of the future” live event organised by Corriere della Sera.

The 160 participants succeeded in achieving an effective reduction in the environmental impact of their packaging, containing 21% of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, reducing energy consumption by 18% and saving 19% of the water used.

The competition, which rewarded the most innovative and eco-sustainable packaging solutions launched on the market between 2018 and 2019, is promoted by CONAI, the Italian Packaging Consortium, and is sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.

Ecopack is one of the winners of the Competition, due to the review of its packaging – presented for the competition – with a view to circular economy, leveraging the saving of raw materials used for the production of the finished product.

Since its establishment in 1939, when the company specialised in cake moulds for large-scale industry, attention to eco-sustainability has been one of the cornerstones of Ecopack.
Things have not changed over the years, during which we have branched out into packaging for savoury products, packaging lines for Delivery and moulds of all kinds and sizes, and for a wide range of uses.

Every year we invest our resources in creating moulds that offer excellent technical performance at high and low temperatures (for use in the oven at temperatures of up to 220°C and for freezing), suitable for contact with food, as confirmed by the numerous certifications of our products, and, above all, eco-sustainable, recyclable and environmentally friendly.
A substantial part of our activity consists in experimenting constantly with new materials, such as the Cocoa Paper range.

This is why we are proud to be among the 92 winners of the CONAI eco-design competition, which has been bringing together, promoting and economically rewarding actions to reduce the environmental impact of packaging since 2013, to encourage and spread a culture of environmental sustainability with a view to prevention in companies.

Ecopack supports FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano

Ecopack supports FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano 900 600 Ecopack

This is one of the ways we show our commitment to the environment in real terms.

Ecopack and ecological commitment since 1939

We began our story in Turin in 1939, as a company specialising in the production of moulds for the confectionery industry, which then broadened its horizons towards the savoury world.

Over the years, Ecopack has developed its range to include over 800 products, and has done so with a special focus on the environment and ecology.

The company’s top priority, in addition to offering its customers articles of the highest quality and with excellent technical performance, is to create its moulds using increasingly eco-sustainable materials.

Examples of this are the new Cocoa Paper range, made with cocoa processing waste, and the Delivery range, which aims to replace disposable plastic non-recyclable plastic take-away trays with containers made of paper and bamboo, which are much more sustainable materials.

What is the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano

The FAI was established in 1975 with the aim of defending Italy’s historical, artistic and landscape heritage.

Every day, it renews its commitment to defend Italy’s cultural, artistic and natural heritage, making the extraordinary riches of the countryside, cities and coastline accessible to everyone.

The FAI project, divided into eight areas of intervention (places, territory, relations, people, education and protection, zero impact, sustainability, civic commitment), is also geared towards educating and raising the community’s awareness of the need to respect nature and art, with active interventions throughout the territory, acting as a spokesperson for civil society.

The Corporate Golden Donor membership programme

Ecopack is a Corporate Golden Donor. We see collaborating with FAI as a step forward in the great project to protect the territory: we want to make Italy a better place to live, work and raise our children.

The first resource on which to focus for the rebirth and development of our country is its immense landscape and cultural heritage, which is of undeniable value and beauty.

With the support of numerous members, who now include Ecopack, the FAI protects 66 assets across the national territory, saving jewels of history, art and landscape from neglect and opening them to the public.
